Dr. João Bettencourt is a Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, specializing in marine systems, environmental monitoring, and ocean governance. His work bridges ocean science, data integration, and policy, with a focus on marine sustainability and science-informed decision-making. With over 15 years of experience across oceanography, physics, and engineering, he led data collection campaigns and developed numerical models for marine environments. His Ph.D. in Physics focused on ocean dynamics, and he contributed to projects across Europe involving coupled physical-biogeochemical modelling and deep-sea mining governance. His current research explores the sustainable development of the blue economy and climate adaptation pathways, with an emphasis on ocean science diplomacy, collaborative governance and conflict prevention in marine contexts.
