Dr. Yoichiro Matsumoto was appointed Science and Technology Advisor to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan in April 2020. He previously served as President of Tokyo University of Science (2018–2021) and as Executive Director of RIKEN (2015–2018). Dr. Matsumoto received his Bachelor’s (1972), Master’s (1974), and Doctoral (1977) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tokyo.
He began his academic career there as Lecturer in 1977, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1978, and became Full Professor in 1992. From 1981 to 1983, he conducted research as a Humboldt Fellow at the Shock Wave Laboratory, RWTH Aachen University, Germany. At the University of Tokyo, he also served as Dean of the School of Engineering (2006–2008) and as Executive Vice President (2009–2015). He is now Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and serves as Program Director at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Dr. Matsumoto’s scientific interests lie in computational engineering, fluids engineering, and biomedical engineering. His research has been recognized with numerous awards, including the JSME Medals for Outstanding Paper (1992, 1998, 2007, 2011), the ASME Calvin W. Rice Lecture Award (2005), the JSME Fluids Engineering Award, the JACM Award for Computational Mechanics (2007), the APACM Award for Computational Mechanics (2010), the ASME Ted Belytschko Applied Mechanics Award (2010), and the JSMF Lifetime Achievement Award (2016).
He has served as President of the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics (2004), the Visualization Society of Japan (2007), and the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (2010). He is an honorary member of VSJ, JSMF, JACM, and JSME, a Life Member of ASME, a Fellow of JSFM, JSME, JFES, and ASME, and a member of the Engineering Academy of Japan.
