Jens Nielsen holds a PhD in Biochemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and an honorary Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Gothenburg. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1995 to 1996.

He served as Professor at DTU from 1998 to 2008 and has been Professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden since 2008. He is a co-founder of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability, which now has more than 300 affiliated researchers, and served as its Chief Scientific Officer from 2013 to 2018.

Since 2019, he has been the CEO of the BioInnovation Institute in Denmark — a new institute with funding of USD 500 million that supports translational research and the creation of life science spin-out companies.

Over the course of his career, Professor Nielsen has trained more than 280 scientists and published over 900 scientific papers, which have been cited more than 160,000 times (current h-index: 169). He is the inventor of more than 50 patents and the founder of six biotechnology companies.

He has received numerous international awards and is a member of 13 prestigious academies, including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering (NAE), National Academy of Medicine (NAM), the Chinese Academy of Engineering, EMBO, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
