I am a Norwegian professor and globally oriented social anthropologist, and an experienced multidisciplinary research director with a 40-year record of field-based work in the Pacific Islands. Since 2015 I have been involved in diplomacy-centred science advice towards the United Nations and the European Union, including serving as a delegate and ocean science adviser to the Permanent Mission of Palau to the United Nations during the negotiations for the international treaty under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to conserve and sustainably use the marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ. During 2018-2021, I directed the University of Bergen’s project SDG Bergen Science Advice, which developed channels for science diplomacy concerning the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I presently coordinate the Norway-Pacific Ocean-Climate Scholarship Programme (N-POC), a large-scale partnership for PhD education between the University of Bergen and the University of the South Pacific.
