Dame Anne pursued a research career on the diversity and function of microbes in soil, the development of environmental sensors and how humans respond to stress at the molecular level. She is Professor Emeritus at the University of Strathclyde and President of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. She serves on a variety of Boards both commercial and charitable and currently has a portfolio career. She was Chief Scientific Adviser to the President of the European Commission (2012 to 2015) and for Scotland (2006 to 2011). She was recognised as a Woman of Outstanding Achievement by the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) in UK and has worked hard to support women in SET. She was awarded a CBE by the Queen in recognition of her services to environmental sciences (2009) and a DBE in 2015 for services to science in the UK and Europe.
